[net.micro.mac] Mock Desk Accessories

harrow@exodus.DEC (Jeff Harrow NCSE TWO/E92 DTN=247-3134) (05/13/85)

I keep seeing references to three apparently very useful public domain
(or "shareware") desk accessories:

MockTerminal
MockWrite
MockPaint

and would like to get copies.

Could some kind sole please post them to net.micro.sources?

Thanks!

Jeff

Just out of curiosity, I sent in a shareware donation for my copy of
the Desk Accessory Mover to Donald Brown, the guy also responsible for
the Mock DA's. In the "newsletter" that accompanied my registration
certificate, Brown made it clear that the versions strewn about on
various bulletin boards and other electronic distribution media were,
in fact, pre-release versions which had leaked out accidentally, and
that the Mock accessories were not being distributed as shareware,
but were being sold for the very reasonable fee of $25. (How's that
for a run-on sentence?) Anyway, it is certainly possible to find
these DA floating around, but I'll leave that dilemma to the conscience
of the individual and part by repeating the address by which the
Mock stuff can be obtained:

Okay, it's retraction time. I didn't actually re-read the newsletter
before posting this, and my memory was imperfect. Upon re-reading,
it was only a pre-release version of MockTerminal that Brown was
trying to quash, not the Mock accessories in general, and the versions
currently available on Compuserve and other places really are
shareware. Sorry for any crisis of conscience the previous posting
may have caused.

Thanks, Lewis. I didn't know this and am glad to find it out. I'll
throw mine away. Before people send in their money, though, you should
know something first: Mockwrite won't work on MacWrite 4.5 files. So
if you have the new system upgrade and want to use Mockwrite on
converted files, you're out of luck.

Perhaps CE Software is aware of this and has fixed the problem already.
Anybody know?

They are not public domain. If you want copies send $30.00 to:

*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE ***
As far as I know MockWrite never worked on MacWrite (2.2 or 4.5) files saved
in the fromated, "entire document" form. MockWrite only can read text files
such as thoughs produced by either version of MacWrite saved as "text only"
or thoughs files made with MockWrite to begin with. If you have a version
of MockWrite that works with MacWrite formated 2.2 files, I would be
interested having it posted to the net, I could be wrong.

Could some kind soul out there explain just what the Mock accessories
are and what they do?

Thank you.

Thanks to those of you who replied to my original query as to
what the Mock Desk Accessories are. Just for the record, I
include here the most explanatory response I received for others
who don't know what the Mock Desk Accessories are:

>	MockWrite, MockPrint, and MockTerminal are desk
>accessories that perform many of the functions of MacWrite,
>printing a file, and MacTerminal (telecommunications software).
>The beauty of all this is, since they are desk accessories, they
>may be opened while another program is running. You can (for
>example) create and/or edit a text file using MockWrite, print it
>using MockPrint, and dial up another computer using MockTerminal
>-- all of this without having to exit the application you were
>originally running(provided, of course, that the application
>gives you access to the Macintosh's Apple menu).
