A good reference on how to access the toolbox routines, quickdraw and some of the other parts of the Macintosh ROMs is Revealing the Macintosh by Chernicoff from hayden Books ( In their Apple Press series). Volume one ( Inside the Toolbox) is availble now and provides explanations of concepts and routines as well as calling sequences from Pascal and assembly language. Volume two ( Programming with the Toolbox) should be available soon.
