[net.micro.mac] MacWork/XL Problem

jed@mb2c.UUCP (John Duncan) (07/05/85)

We just received XL/Serve, which allows the Mac/XL to act as a disk server
and print spooler for the imagewriter. When it came in there was a warning
attached to the outside. Since it may affect other MacWorks users, I thought
it worth posting:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
				*** WARNING ***

25 June 1985

Today we learned that Apple has "recalled" the production release of MacWorks
XL (disk numbers 682-0103B and 682-0087C), due to a hard disk driver problem.
They are working hard on correcting the bug and will be re-releasing very soon.
The re-release is expected to have new disk Part numbers 682-0103C and 682-
0087D, as well as new internal version number encoded in MacWorks.

Until the problem is corrected, virtually all programs, including Finder and
MacWorks itself, will occasionally (*very* rarely) cause spurious writes to
the hard disk, resulting in corrupt files. Typically, because of their location
on the profile, "System" or one of the other System files will be damaged, but
any file may be damaged. The damage may not be readily apparent, but may be
severe.

Though XL/Serve will install and run correctly on the recalled version of
MacWorks XL, we urge you to acquire and install the corrected version as soon
as possible. XL/Serve as shipped should work correctly, without modification,
on the coming re-release and other future releases of MacWorks XL.
