DMS Design has just finished a $150.00 SASI/SCSI interface for the Mac that includes sources drivers/formatters for the generic SASI/SCSI type hard disk controllers -- Xebec S1410 with 5/10mb. With the $150 package you get the Xebec software sources and a host adapter board that plugs into the inside of your Mac using the ROM sockets -- and ONE wire with a clip (could be soldered for very reliable connection). Sources are provided to modify as needed for other controller and drive combinations -- or to use as a basis for non-disk type custom interfaces. The driver is based on a ram disk type driver to implement a cache that can be set from 1 to 300 sectors. It is Fast. We also have tape driver and backup software under development to be available within a few weeks. Supported will be for 1/4" cartridge and 1/2" 9trk 800/1600BPI tape drives. If you have access to cheap hard disks and controllers -- you can have a hard disk on your mac for less than $500. At the Santa Clara Fairground computer swap last weekend hard disks went in the $75 to $600 range depending on new/used, size, performance, and manufacturer. SASI/SCSI controllers were priced between $30 and $150. The interface kit can be ordered NOW from Fastime, 464 Marsh St Suite A, PO Box 12508, San Luis Obispo, Calif 93406 -- or write for a flyer on all the other related SCSI products for the Mac. Fastime can also supply NEW controllers and Drives for a reasonable price along with the Mac SCSI interface -- including power supplies and cables. A 10MB kit is priced at $950, and 1/4" tape at about $1500. 30MB (under $1500), 110 MB (under $2900) and 9trk kits are also available. An internal 10/20 MB upgrade is in the works that should be available within 90 days for under $1800. Order terms are UPS COD, check with order (5% discount), or Cashiers Check With Order (8% disc) -- payment-with-order customers are given priority shipments -- stock to 8 weeks delivery. Although the MacSCSI upgrade may void your warrenty or Apple care -- the mac boards are not altered and you shoud be able to find a reasonable dealer to service your Mac SCSI upgraded system -- they may even install it for you for their normal shop rates -- requires under an hour to install and test.
