Since I haven't seen this mentioned yet, I thought I would let the net know that the May 1985 final Software Supplement (dated July 2) is out. I received mine today. Included are 13 disks and three sets of documentation. The disks are: Workshop 3.9 Update disk (1 and 2) -- must be used with Lida Workshop 3.0. 5/85 Workshop supplement disks (two disks) in 2.0 format for use with any lisa workshop. 5/85 examples disks (two disks) -- Macintosh format, contains source to example programs, requires Lisa Workshop to build. 5/85 Macstuff disks (four disks) Macintosh format, includes toosl, utilities, etc... for use on the Mac 5/85 Mac build disk -- the latest official system stuff for use in products, includes the new printer and finder. MacWorks XL version 3.0 The documentation includes the official printed pamphlet on ResEdit, a set of revisions to the Lisa Pascal Workshop, and about two inches of documentation in standard three ring format. Highlights include: o Switcher information beta draft o an updated Trap list o Appletalk stuff o an updated and official 'Putting together a Mac Application' (this is no longer part of IM) o a first draft of 'Macintosh Hardware (now part of IM) for people wanting to build stuff onto the mac or write drivers o a rewritten 'Printer Manager' for IM o Using QuickDraw while printer o Optimising code for the LaserWriter o Finders and Foreign Drives (about adding non-apple disk drives to the system) o Sanelib V1.2 o Fedit o Life after the font/DA mover -- how to make sure your DA still works o future Macintosh architectures o Lots of other goodies as well The future macintosh architecture document is probably the single most important document in the supplement -- it attempts to tell you all the things you are NOT supposed to do if you want to continue to run on Macintosh computers in the future. They basically say that if you don't run on the XL now, you're in trouble already, and discuss all the little tricks that will get you in more trouble in the future. Some of these become valid on the current mac when the newer floppy, the hard disk, or the new ROM becomes available, so it is very important for developers to start work on this now.... There is a comment reminding people that this is the final supplement. Apple suggests that that interested parties get involved in CompuServe, as future tools and utilities will be made available through them. In fact, they mention Maug about half a dozen times, so if you want to keep an eye on what Apple is doing, it seems to make sense to get involved with the Maug.... Tools removed from the Software Supplement: RMover, IconEditor, Alert/dialog Editor, examine file, set file, and hex dump (replaced by either ResEdit, REdit, or FEdit). Note on Macintosh Pascal: Macintosh Pascal (the Pascal interpreter) has an undocumented copy protection scheme that causes an ExitToShell after 100 mouse clicks. If you've been running MacPascal off of a COPY (emphasis theirs) of your master disk, you've no doubt experienced this problem. To rectify this problem, simple (sic) run off of one of your master disks (two were shipped in the package). [editorial comment: I refuse to buy ANY package that has destructive copy-protection schemes. I suggest heartily that (1) everyone else follow the same pattern, advertising widely such destructive schemes, and (2) Apple reconsider their position on this. Legal backups should not cause me to lose work. Period. I refuse to support packages that DO cause me to lose work because of concious decisions] --- I suggest, BTW, that you let UPS catch up with you if you are due a supplement and haven't received it -- it is probably the case that it just takes them time to get all the supplements out (plus, I am pretty much next door to Apple, so UPS doesn't need to tranship my stuff to get it to me...) chuq -- :From the carousel of the autumn carnival: Chuq Von Rospach {cbosgd,fortune,hplabs,ihnp4,seismo}!nsc!chuqui nsc!chuqui@decwrl.ARPA Your fifteen minutes are up.
