Can any of you coin collectors out there tell me what's current with pennies? I understand that the 1982 pennies are supposed to be made from copper clad aluminum rather than from solid copper. Also, these newer pennies are supposed to be substantially lighter than the older pennies. Well... I've collected a bunch of 1982 pennies and can't seem to notice any weight difference. Are all 1982 pennies copper clad aluminum or are only some of them? How about 1981 pennies, are they all solid copper or are some of them copper clad aluminum also? Is there a means for telling the copper clad aluminum pennies apart from the solid copper pennies? Many thanks for any information you might be able to send. --Rick ...ucbvax!lbl-unix!uw-beaver!uw-june!furuta ...decvax!microsoft!uw-beaver!uw-june!furuta or Furuta@Washington on the ARPAnet

Some 82 pennies have 3.5g mass , these are copper. some have 3.2g mass, these are zink cored. I can not tell by the ring when they are dropped. From the 20 i have collected and weighed, it seem that about 10% are zink cored. Dave Holander
