[net.micro.mac] EMACS for the Mac

royt@gitpyr.UUCP (Roy M. Turner) (07/28/85)

I have heard rumors that there is a version of EMACS for the Mac, and that
it is perhaps available at CMU...is there any basis to this? If so, could
someone either send me a copy (if it is public domain and not huge (faint
hope)), or tell me who to contact for further information. While I have
nothing against MacWrite, and use it to death as a text editor, I'm afraid
that the Symbolics Lisp Machines that we have here have spoiled me for
entering programs!

Also, while I'm dreaming, did anyone ever follow up on those requests a
few months back to look into porting Hack to the Mac?

Thanks in advance.

Roy

If there is a version of EMACS for the Mac at CMU, I haven't heard anything
about it. I'd also like to get my hands on such a program if it exists.

I thought briefly about trying to port the PDP-11 version of hack to the Mac,
but after I had problems getting several files to compile, I thought that it
would be a good idea to check the program out on the VAX first. It compiled
there OK, but when I ran it I found that it had bugs and was missing most of
the good features of Hack 1.0.*. I didn't try to port the regular version of
Hack because my Mac only has 128K, which I'm sure is not enough.

I seem to recall that someone was attempting to port hack to a Mac, but
that was posted a long time ago. If that person is out there, how about
an update. (Was it you Chuq?)

I had downloaded the source for Rogue 3.6 to my Mac. While this is a very
early version of rogue, I think that I can get it working on a 128K machine
without too many segments. The source alone occupies 280K on the disk. I have
a feeling I will have to compile stuff to object code then move it to another
disk just to link it. (I am a long way from that!) By the way, does anyone
have a package to simulate cursor addressing for Mac text?? It would be the
easiest first "hack" at getting MacRogue off the ground.

I did work on it for a while, but decided to put it off for a couple of
reasons. One was lack of time, and the other was that it is simply too
large to do any real development on a two floppy system -- a hard disk or
Sumacc would be need to work with something that size.

The other problem is the lack of a good gotoxy package for the Mac, but I
have a design for something that will handle something like that --
cleareol, cleareop, gotoxy, and a few other critical functions. Won't be
'optimal' like curses, but also won't need something like termcap (a REAL
feature). Of course, I haven't done much on it either, but I will Real Soon
Now.

I have the source files for HACK on my Mac, but have not yet begun to convert.
