Does anyone have any knowledge of the Haba double-sided drive described in the PC Network ad on p.188 of the August MacWorld? I quote: Haba 800kb Mac Add-on Drive Twice the capacity! Reads standard disks! ..........$315.00* (Here the * means add 8% for a total of $340.20.) Is this thing for real? Any comments from people who have dealt with PC Network before? See the conference from CompuServe with Andy Hertzfeld. There are some comments on Haba products in general. The overall opinion on MAUG(tm) is that Haba drives are to be avoided. As for PC Network, I called Haba, and they said that the 800k drive is NOT yet available, they are still choosing a vendor for the drives ( this was about three weeks ago -- long after the PC Network add appeared ). I wonder how long till PC Network advertizes the Sider hard disk? :-) And S1 for the Mac :-) :-) :-) -- Tim Smith ihnp4!{cithep,wlbr!callan}!tim

My brother bought an "800k" Haba disk from Telasoft In Phoenix about a month ago. Several interesting things: o He has absolutely NO IDEA if or how the thing stores 800k, 'cause absolutely NO DOCUMENTATION comes with the device. o The disk doesn't seem to interface seamlessly with the Mac. He has had disks go bad magically while sitting peacefully in the drive, and it has apparently trashed disks while "cleaning them up" prior to ejecting them. o The eject mechanism in the drive will send your disk into low Earth orbit if you let it. All in all, my advice (not necessarily my brother's) is AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. --- das

However, PC Network was definitely advertising them before Haba was selling them. > o The eject mechanism in the drive will send your disk into low Earth > orbit if you let it. This can be great if you fall alseep during a download! The download finishes, the Mac ejects the disk, the disk lands on your face, and you wake up!
