[net.micro.mac] Forcing Finder to reread file attributes

barmar@mit-eddie.UUCP (Barry Margolin) (08/18/85)

I often run the Finder (version 4.1) under the Switcher (4.0). A few
days ago I was also running FEdit (or perhaps some other application
that can modify file attributes, like SetFile) at the same time. I
changed the Creator/Type of a file so that it would look like a MacWrite
text file. However, when I switched to the Finder and attempted to
print or invoke it I continued to get the "An application cannot be
found" for the document, and the icon hadn't changed. Obviously, the
Finder has cached the attributes, and the changes made by the other
application didn't propogate to the Finder's information. Is there a
way to convince the Finder to reread a disk and update its information?
I tried ejecting and reinserting the disk, but it must have noticed that
the disk hadn't been modified while it was removed. I tried trashing
the disk, but it wouldn't throw away the image (I guessed that it was
because I had a third application running, and it came from that disk).
Would it have reread the disk if I had inserted it into another machine
and made some modifications (I am assuming that the aforementioned "disk
hasn't changed" decision is made based on the modification date of the
disk)? That can be inconvenient if no unused Mac is available (we have
two at work, and they are often both in use). Or is my only recourse to
reload the finder?
