[net.misc] Unicom

whm (09/27/82)

I've heard from a very reliable source that "Unicom" was the name of a
(you guessed it) Bell project in the early 60's, and is probably
trademarked. This would seem to make it a bad choice as a name for
upcoming Unix-/usr/group-ST conference.

Does anybody know more about this?

UNICOM is also the standard name for the kind of aeronautical
radio stations found at (typically) small airports. It is used
for the base operator to transmit and receive advisory information
("Wind now favors runway 21, and we have a Mooney inbound from the south")
and for pilots to talk to another.

I was under the impression that part of the test for trademark violation
was whether the products could reasonably be confused. Unless the 60's
Bell Unicom was a conference, I don't see the great problem, but then I'm
no lawyer.
