[net.micro.mac] Switcher 4.3 problems

tim@callan.UUCP (Tim Smith) (08/20/85)

Has anybody had problems with the posting of Switcher 4.3 in net.sources.mac?
I can convert it with xbin, but someone has told me that xbin won't work
for them. Has anybody succesfully used xbin on it? Is there a problem
with earlier xbins? I am using the latest version.

Also, I have noted that files that xbin has no trouble with will not work
for me with BinHex 5.0 on my Mac. They get a checksum error. But xbin and
macput work fine. Anybody know what gives?

ps: there have been some bugs reported on MAUG(tm) with using EDIT with
switcher 4.3 if always convert clipboard is in effect. Hertzfeld says
4.4 will be done soon ( so much for 4.3 being the final version! ).

I used an earlier version of xbin and got a working version of Switcher 4.3;
I am hesitant to throw away my 4.0 version, however, because of the checksum
problem with BinHex 4.0 and 5.0 (which I also encountered).

It appears that the poster of Switcher 4.3 used unxbin to convert it, and
that unxbin does NOT calculate the checksum correctly, or otherwise produces
a result that is incompatible with BinHex. Until this problem is corrected,
I strongly suggest that unxbin NOT be used for software postings, since
many rely on BinHex exclusively (those not running UNIX on VAX's in
particular).

I attempted to get Switcher 4.3 using a macput -u, after editing out the mail header/trailer. No go. An xbin, followed by a simple macput worked fine. The original transfer worked, by always gave "checksum" error with BinHex 4.0 or 5.0.

I used xbin/macput on 4.3, and am running it even as I type. But a
coworker of mine said he had problems xbin'ing it. Must be a function
of the wind.

xbin always searches for a line that starts "(This file must be converted..."
before starting its conversion. BinHex doesn't. My experience is that for
binhex to work correctly, you should remove anything above the "must be
converted" line. Because binhex 4.0 stuff is delimited by colons, netnews
headers give binhex severe indigestion.
