Three notes about the Switcher: The Switcher supports a limited form of multi-tasking. An application can supply a procedure that will be called while it is switched out. (It's not the same as real multi-tasking, but it is better than nothing.) This procedure can do calculations, receive files, etc., but it has to be very careful about not stepping on anyone else. The Switcher documentation that has been supplied with the Software Supplement (and I would guess on Compuserve) was not complete, which is why it did not talk about the Switcher default document. It is hard for the documentation to keep up with a program that had been changing as much as the Switcher. In addition to the user documentation, there is supposed to be an "Inside Switcher" that explains things like the multi-tasking. One possible solution to the problem of getting the Finder (within the Switcher) to recognize new attributes set in FEdit. I haven't actually tried this, however. Eject the disk in question and throw away its disk icon. Run FEdit, choose open, THEN put the disk in. Make the change and switch into the Finder. The Finder should recognize the newly inserted disk and will display its icon. Larry -- Larry Rosenstein Apple Computer UUCP: {voder, idi, nsc, ios, mtxinu, dual}!apple!lsr CSNET: lsr@Apple.CSNET

Can anyone out there tell me whether 4.3's inability to load and a designated document is a bug or an unimplemented feature? Randy Goebel U. of Waterloo

I used xbin and macput. I found that I had to set the 'bundle bit' using Fedit before I could open Switcher documents directly from the finder. Now that I've done this, everything seems to work fine, including the automatic loading of "Switcher.startup". -- Doug Moen (watmath!watcgl!kdmoen) University of Waterloo Computer Graphics Lab

I don't know what sort of problems you are having with Switcher 4.3, but I've 'xbin'ed it, 'macput'ted it down to the Mac, and I'm using it as I'm writing this. I've even set up my default startup document. Boy! That really saves a lot of clicking and dragging to set up the Switcher environment. Could it be you've just gotten a bad copy of 4.3? I'll gladly mail you a copy if you want. Jeff Davis Bell Communications Research 50 Cragwood Road, SPL 1A-258 South Plainfield, NJ 07080 (201)561-7100 x2002 pyuxhh!pyuxjj!jbd

Although your wording seems confused, it might be that you mean that, in the Finder, double-clicking on a switcher document doesn't start the Switcher but provokes the message "An application can't be found to open thid document". The posting of the 4.3 Switcher didn't have the Bundle bit set. If you set this (using SetFile, or with FEdit's Show Finder Attributes menu item), it will work again.
