[net.misc] book recommendation

As a result of this creationism discussion I read a book which I highly
recommend. It is by Dorothy Nelkin and the title is "Science Textbook
Controversies and the Politics of Equal Time." The book is from
The MIT Press and the author is a sociologist. She takes a very calm
and even handed approach, clearly elucidating the social foundations
of these disputes.

The book centers on the California textbook controversy and the national
controversy over MACOS (Man : A Course of Study.) It also discusses
the science education efforts of the NSF from the sixties onward, that
Dave Hollander may have been alluding to. The book was published in 1977
and does not contain anything on the latest rounds in Arkansas and
Louisiana.
