I have a friend who is in charge of a school newspaper and wants to do typesetting by himself. What software is available for the Macintosh (mainly for producing the newspaper)?. Are there many problems with the Apple Laser Printer or is there a better printer he should get? Finally, will the Mac XL (Lisa) run regular Mac software (I remember the Lisa's had problems with their emulator. Thanks in Advance -Chris

There are at least four packages your friend could use. Without trying to rate or rank them, since new versions have just been released, they are: 1. PageMaker 3. ReadySetGo Aldus Corporation Manhattan Graphics Corporation 616 First Avenue, Suite 400 163 Varick Street Seattle, Washington 98104 New York, New York 10013 (206) 467-8165 (212) 924-2778 2. MacPublisher 4. JustText Boston Software Publishers, Inc. Knowledge Engineering 1260 Boylston Street G.P.O. Box 2139 Boston, Massachusetts 02215 New York, New York 10116 (617) 267-4747 (212) 473-0095 Quick Notes: 1. PageMaker just came out of Beta testing. 2. MacPublisher has released MacPublisher II with many improvements. 3. ReadySetGo released its new version at the MacWorld Expo (August 21st). 4. JustText is from Bill Bates, version 1.0 is presently available, version 1.1 in a month or so. This package creates PostScript files, rather than simply prepending a PostScript header. It is intended for graphics arts professionals and has many unique features. In addition: 1. Sprintout 2. Personal Publishing Typesetting Service Corporation Personal Publishing 50 Clifford Street 549 Hawthorn Avenue Providence, Rhode Island 02903 Barlett, Illinois 60103 (401) 421-2264 Notes: 1. Sprintout is a service, you prepare text and graphic documents on your Mac and send a disk to them for overnight processing of laser printed copies (300 dots per inch -- QMS 1200 printer) or laser typeset proofs (resin-coated paper -- 2450 lines per inch). You create your documents using all standard software for the Mac such as: MacWrite, Word, MacDraw, MacPublisher, etc. 2. Personal Publishing is a magazine that concentrates on the art of creating pages. It does more than tell you about new equipment and programs, it has regular departments on how to understand and use type effectively, etc. Regular departments include Gallery, Type, IBM PC, Mac, Amiga, and Layout. One year (12 issue) subscription is $30.00. Disclaimer: Much of the notes consist of extracts from the advertising literature provided by the listed companies. I talked to the Sprintout people at the MacExpo about their typeset output from Mac documents. They said that they couldn't show me a sample because Adobe hadn't prepared the Merganthaler (sp?) fonts yet. Does anyone know when/if Adobe is supposed to do this? -- ---- Everyone sees the world differently, Edwin said, but nightmares are pretty much the same.
