[net.micro.mac] Cooling your Mac cheap!

wasser@viking.DEC (John A. Wasser) (09/11/85)

A the MacWorld Exposition I saw a fan that fit in the handle
depression on the top of the Mac. I didn't buy it because
it was being sold for well over $30 however this pointed out
a feature of the Mac that I had not noticed before... there
is a cooling vent under the handle!

To add a fan to my Mac, I started by making a shroud to fit
BETWEEN the top vents (so they aren't blocked) and down over
the back of the Mac a few inches to cover the handle depression
entirely. Then I took an old surplus boxer fan (about 4
inches wide) and glued it over an appropriate hole cut in the
shroud facing UP (to suck air out of the handle depression).
The weight of the fan keeps the shroud from sliding off the
(slightly tilted) top of the Mac (with the fan suction to help,
	too).

The fan is plugged into the same power strip as the Mac so it
comes on when I turn on the strip. I made the shroud out of
foamcore board (because it was handy) but cardboard, mat board
or sheetmetal would probably work as well.
