A number of readers have asked where I saw Megamax C for $180.00. It was advertised in the September 1985 issue of MacWorld (Jazz or Excel), page 50. The company selling offering the low price is Northeastern Software, 88 Ryders Lane, Stratford, Connecticut 06497. Their toll free order number is 1-800-382-2242. They boast "Free overnight air shipping. Call for details". I have never ordered anything from this company, so I can not vouch for their service. Perhaps someone else would care to comment on this. Other places you might check are 1) Local users groups 2) Various other mail order companies that say "$Call" --Gordon Hamachi

Perhaps someone else would care to comment on this. I ordered Megamax C from Northeastern 3 weeks ago. They said they had it in stock and I should receive it in 3-4 business days. When it didn't arrive after a week I called them back and was told it had been backordered. The next day I got my charge card bill and found that they had put the charge through dated the day I ordered it. I wasn't too happy about that so I called Northeastern again. They said it was their standard policy to bill when the order is placed even if the items have to be backordered. I thought seriously about cancelling the order at this point but the next best price I could find was $199.00 at Programs Plus so I stuck with Northeastern. Today I was told "it was shipped yesterday". We'll see. --Jamie Painter ARPA: jamie@uw-june.ARPA UUCP: {ihnp4,decvax,tektronix}!uw-beaver!uw-june!jamie

The woman I talked to said 7 to 10 days. I still (29 days later) have not received it. I called them once at night and someone took down the information and said someone would call back the next day. Perhaps I was out of the office, but no call. More aggravating: though I have not received the product, the charge has already shown up on my Visa bill! It seems to me that if they have the time to bill me, they should have time to send me the product. If others have had more pleasant experiences, please post them so we know whether this is typical or not. I should also say that those I did talk to on the phone were courteous and friendly. -- | Paul DuBois {allegra,ihnp4,seismo}!uwvax!uwmacc!dubois --+-- | "A mind like cement: thoroughly mixed and permanently set" |

I've had good experiences with Icon Review (ads in MacWorld, etc, and a decent newsletter/ software review that they send you). They didn't quite believe some of the prices, but I had a list of page numbers. Saved me about $20 on my most recent order. Since the stuff came almost immediately, I didn't worry about the credit card, but I believe the charge date was the same as the shipping date. bill -- William Cox Computer Sciences Department University of Wisconsin, Madison WI bill@uwisc ...{ihnp4,seismo,allegra}!uwvax!bill

Perhaps someone else would care to comment on this. I called Northeastern some time ago asking about the $180 price and was told it was $230 instead. Since I didn't then know where the ad had appeared, I couldn't argue, and therefore ordered the compiler from Programs Plus instead, for $200. Their representative was honest enough to tell me they couldn't ship it immediately because they were awaiting the next release from Megamax; my copy arrived a few days ago. -- --Steve Correll sjc@s1-c.ARPA, ...!decvax!decwrl!mordor!sjc, or ...!ucbvax!dual!mordor!sjc

Just to confuse things it is very likely that distributors that shipped Megamax to customers recently "from stock" shipped a slightly out of date release. Distributors that said "We expect to get our shipment in tommorrow," were echoing what Megamax's publisher was telling Megamax. The 2.1 release of Megamax is better than the 1.? & 2.0 releases and is worth the wait/cost of upgrade. Of course that doesn't excuse the billing on order, but it does distribute the guilt for the shipping delays. Immediate shipping isn't always a good thing if it gets you obsolete software. ben hyde, cambridge.

I posted a message a while ago about my experience with Northeastern, which at that time was: Order placed, "7-to-10 day" delivery asserted, three-week wait, was told "someone will get back to you" after calling, and no one did. I waited another week, and then my wife called, and she also was told someone would get back to her. No one did. I cancelled the order. As I noted before, all phone representative were friendly and courteous (including the one I spoke to when I cancelled the order), but I'd rather have service with a snarl and get the product, than service with a smile and no product. -- | Paul DuBois {allegra,ihnp4,seismo}!uwvax!uwmacc!dubois --+-- | "A mind like cement: thoroughly mixed and permanently set" |
