First, thanks to everyone who sent replies to my original article.
In case you didn't read it, it described how my mac's external
drive has been trashing disks.
Now I'll summarize the advice I received. Most people who read
this group probably have heard these tips, but if you haven't,
you may want to remember them.
1. Keep you external drive on the right side of your mac. The left
side is bad because of interference from the mac's power supply;
the top is bad because of heat. (Incidently, that was never my
problem)
2. Buy high quality disks. Every disk my external drive ate was
a Memorex, all from the same box, all the same age.... I received
a reply from someone who's had similar experiences with that
brand, and as I remember there were some postings several months
ago complaining about Memorex. I have nothing against the company,
except my personal experience with their microdisks, and what I've
read in this newsgroup.
I've had good luck with Sony disks, and have heard good things
about Apple disks too (the tan ones).
That's it. I haven't figured out exactly what my problem is (or, hopefully,
was) but the above tips could save you from losing important files.
