What kind of experience have people had with diskettes from different manufacturers. There was an argument at the NJ Mac users meeting last night about who makes decent diskettes (brand X is bad--no, they've changed and are now ok; etc.). Another topic of interest is the places in the back of Macworld that sell diskettes at almost unbelievable prices. Are they ok (are the "Sony" disks for $20 a box any good)? Send me your recommendations, good or bad, and I'll summarize them and post a followup article in about a week. I've had 3 bad out of eleven blues Sony disks; but, I've had only 1 bad out of 25 or so tan "Apple"(or equivalent) disks. Certainly, no large statistical base; but, significant to me, nonetheless. --[J.P.]-- (JON P. GORRONO, UC AT DAVIS)

Some of my friends and I just bought 200 Sony disks at $2.02 each (including shipping) from one of the ads in Macworld (The company is called Disk World, they also advertise in Computer Shopper). This was my second order; I'd gotten 50 from them when the price was $2.28 or so. I have had one "bad" (squeeky) disk out of the first 50, one out of the second batch. I recommend the company (based only on my experience with them). For me, the disks (sony single-sided) have been much more reliable than the Apple disks; of 40 Apple disks, I've had to get replacements for 4. Memorex, believe it or not, says their disks "are alright as long as you don't use them in the external drive" ! ! ! ! One insurance company here in Madison returned quite a few (not a truckload, as Illinois apparently did, but at least several thousand disks) due to high failure rate. I bought a box of memorex. with repeated returns, I had seen sixteen disks before I had 10 that worked (the bad ones didn't just squeek, they made that awful clicking/grinding noise) On the other hand, some friends swear by their memorex disks. I would never buy another. bill -- William Cox Computer Sciences Department University of Wisconsin, Madison WI bill@uwisc ...{ihnp4,seismo,allegra}!uwvax!bill
