if you delete the ImageWriter file from your disk that you use for MacTerminal then whenever you use MacTerminal it pops up an alert box that complains about there not being an Imagewriter file and makes you click on an ok box. this is a nuisance. obviously i removed the ImageWriter file on purpose (so i'll have more disk space for downloading). does anybody know how i could create a bogus ImageWriter file of the smallest size that would shut up MacTerminal? -- rusty c. wright {ucbvax,ihnp4,akgua,hplabs,sdcsvax}!sdcarl!rusty

Rusty@sdcarl asks how to avoid the alert box that MacTerminal puts up if there is no ImageWriter file. I went into my MacTerminal with Resource Editor and turned off the alert box. Not too hard: Pop up the list of ALRTs and the list of DITLs. Start looking at the DITLs match ALRTs (same ID) until you find one that says 'There is not file "" on your disk. You can run MacTerminal, but you will be unable to print.' (This is 4196 in MacTerminal 1.1.) Then open the corresponding ALRT item and set all the "stg?snd*" and "stg?boxDrawn" buttons to 0. This should prevent the alert box from appearing. -- =Spencer ({ihnp4,decvax}!utah-cs!thomas, thomas@utah-cs.ARPA) "When wrath runs rampage in your heart you must hold still that rambunctions tongue!" - Sappho

A slightly different solution was posted some time back. (Sorry, original poster, I've forgotten your name.) Using ResEdit, open a copy of MacTerminal and find the alert that squawks about the missing ImageWriter file. Turn off all of the staging bits. Poof! The alert no longer does anything. If you try to print, you'll get a somewhat cryptic message, but it will probably occur to you what's going on. -- Ephraim Vishniac [apollo, bbncca, cadmus, decvax, harvard, linus, masscomp]!wanginst!vishniac vishniac%Wang-Inst@Csnet-Relay

This is how a friend of mine got rid of the "No IW file" dialog without to much trouble: Using ResEdit, open the existing imagewriter file. Select EVERYTHING and select Clear from the edit menu (or just hit backspace if it's no big thing to you to delete 25K with one keystroke). There. Now close the file and you will now have a zero sized IW on your disk. (and still a system file, if it matters.) Speaking about damagewriters (I mean imagewriters), does anyone have much experience on the new IW II that would care to fill us in on if it is worth it or not. Dennis Adams adams1@gumby.wisc.edu
