[net.micro.mac] Posted Dungeons of Doom to net-sources-mac

hamachi@KIM (Gordon Hamachi) (10/17/85)

I posted a shareware game called Dungeons of Doom V2.0 to net.sources.mac.
It comes in 3 parts: a readme file, a startup screen, and the program
itself.

This program requires 512K of memory. It bombs in the segment loader
when I try to run it on my puny 128K Mac.

I downloaded these files with great anticipation of fun and a little
trepidation, 200+k is a long time at 1200baud. Anyway I followed
the exact instructions in README, ie. use an empty disc, minimum
system (control panel, system fonts only) DofD2 and the startup screen.
Thats it. No finder. Well hmm so tried booting from that disk and got
the big X wouldnt boot I even tried putting a finder in the disk.
For some people the problem may have been
immediatly apparent. What I had done is completely erased a disk for this
purpose and copied all the stuff to it and made DofD2 the startup and directed.
Apparently though that completely blows away the boot blocks (or they were
never there it was just full of text files). The moral of the story is
if you cant get it to boot use something to get the boot blocks written.
I used Fedit 3.5 and violla, pretty picture and all.

BTW This is the first game for the mac That I can honestly rage about
Its GREAT, admittedly the game isnt an original concept but playing it on
the mac is loads of fun. Kudos go to the author (whose name I forgot to bring).
He'll be getting my registration.

I agree with the person who was raving about D of D...very nice game, and the
author will be getting my registration, too, as soon as the first of the
month (and my paycheck!) rolls around. I was semi-addicted to rogue for a
while, so I am glad someone transferred an analogue to the Mac.

Now, to the author. If you are considering other things to include in the
future versions of the game, how about some of the things out of Hack? Like
the puppy dog, leprechauns, shops w/ nasty shopkeepers, etc?

All in all, though, a great game. Download it immediately! :-)

Yes, I'm having fun with Dungeon of Doom too. I sent in my reg. today,
along with a letter detailing my suggestions for future versions.
Before many, many such lists start making their appearance in this
newsgroup (or in net.games.rogue -- the game has much more in common
with rogue than Hack.) it should be noted that the kind soul who
posted the program was NOT the fellow who wrote it. The author
listed a Compuserve "address", but not a net address. If he isn't
on the net, the suggestions would probably be more effective
if made by US Mail. (But please do not construe this warning
to mean that discussions of the game are not appropriate here --
I'm looking forward to them.)

One more rave review for Dungeons of Doom. It is one of the
(maybe THE) best shareware game I've come across. I am also sending
in my money. Also, has anyone left the game in PAUSE mode for a LONG
time. Try it...

The posting of the mac version of Dungeons of Doom never made it to our site.
I would be very much obliged if some kind soul could mail me a copy so that I
could make it available here. Thanks (I hope) in advance...

I might like Dungeons of Doom (DoD ?) too ... if it has been changed to
work on my Lisa. I can't see much fun in a hanging machine with a
trashed screen.
