Recently I saw a book at B. Dalton's entitled "Hidden Power of the
Macintosh" from the Waite Group, especially Christopher Morgan. The book
presents the concepts behiond the Mac organization and the ROMs. It is
intended for a reader who has not yet written systems code for the machine and
does not go as far as the Chernicoff books which have been mentioned earlier.
Nevertheless, it is easier to understand and does provide enough information
to puzzle out the writing of at least some useful programs. Unfortunately,
the book is based on Finder 1.1 rather than the latest version. This doesn't
change much, but it does make a few statements no longer correct.
There is another book from SAMS on programming the Mac in MS Basic 2.0
which goes into the use of windows, menus, etc. in a little more detail than
the other tutorial books on MS Basic on the Mac. I haven't read it yet.
