[net.micro.mac] Stop Posting Junk!!!

hamachi@KIM (Gordon Hamachi) (11/20/85)

A simple solution to the volume problem on net.*.mac:

USE MORE RESTRAINT IN POSTING TO THESE NEWS GROUPS!

For example, while it is amusing, we can probably do without that "bomber"
application that does nothing but make you chase the restart button across
the screen. This may have been okay in the past, but if we're risking the
entire newsgroup, we can probably do without such programs.

Also, there is NO NEED to copy an entire message inside yours when posting
a follow-up. Usually AT MOST one or two sentences will suffice. A little
checking with wc & grep in /usr/spool/news/net/micro/mac shows that almost
10% of the characters in this group are copies of someone else's postings!
If you exclude mail headers, it is more like 14% of the ``useful'' content.

Resist the urge to post unless you have something new and important to say.

Omit redundant postings.

Think twice about huge postings, and edit them if possible. A good example
is the debate between IBM and Mac users, which wasn't very interesting.

Send more stuff to other newsgroups! :-)
