[net.micro.mac] Chuck Bigelow and Font Design

mo@seismo.CSS.GOV (Mike O'Dell) (11/22/85)

First off, Chuck Bigelow and the other folks who designed Lucida
are ANYTHING but amateurs!!! He worked with Knuth at Stanford,
for instance, on digital type design. As for the Macworld article,
the pictures are poor reproductions - I have seen the original slides
in his EUUG talk in Copenhagen and when reproduced well (direct slide
viewing, not with ink on paper via plates made from the slides) Pellucida
is gorgeous. It does indeed have jaggies - but it is incredibly READABLE!!!
Lucida on laser output looks even better. A serious problem with the
LaserWriter is that the Mac screen fonts for Times and Helvetica are
AWFUL, not to mention that the T&H fonts themselves aren't exactly perfect
on an output page. If I could buy Lucida and Pellucida together
I would in a moment. This way I could have a font I can read on
the screen and the Imagewriter, as well as one which will look the same,
only smoother, on the LaserWriter.

If you EVER get a chance to hear Chuck speak, beg, borrow, or steal to
take advantage of it.
