[net.micro.mac] Flight Simulator for Mac query

supp@sphinx.UChicago.UUCP (Steve Upp) (12/12/85)

Has anyone seen a flight simulator for the Mac yet? I heard about one a
few months ago on the net, however we never got a copy of it here. Could
someone send it to me please?

If anyone has any ideas or heard any rumors about one I would like to know.
I'm thinking about writing my own, for fun, however if a product has been
released or is about to be released, I would rather do that than spend the
time to write my own.

Thanks much

I responded to another article like this a few weeks back, but for those who did not see it, here is a list of the (that I know are available) Flight Simulators for the Macintosh.

1) Harrier Strike Mission - by Miles Computing - Fly the well armed Harrier on its mission to destroy the enemies island headquarters. Very realistic and very exciting. Real flight(!) is in use in the Expert mode, a modified version (with easier steering(?) is in place for the beginner.

2) Fokker Triplane - ? - Supposed to be a very good simulation of flying this old-fashioned aircraft.

3) Mac-Challenger - ? - Land (and land only!) the Space Shuttle from your orbit around the planet earth. The graphic views are very good and for the beginning computer pilot this may be the best bet.

I personally own Harrier and find it to be a very good simulatin although I find the graphics to be to stick-type (no real-life graphics). Having not used the other two I can not give my personal opinion as to the best. I suggest seeing your local dealer and trying them out for yourself.

I have seen one advertized at the Apple company store. I think it
was a third party software product.
Wait for a review (if someone has it) rather than building a new one.
(Unless you want to do it just for fun!!)

Come on now. You can't be serious! Get a recent copy of any "mac" magazine.
There are three commercial flight simulators available easily thru mail order
houses. I don't know the company names, but they are MacChallenger, Harrier
Strike Mission, and last, but definitely not least, Fokker Triplane. In my
(humble) opinion, Fokker is the best and most fun (I actually landed the thing
a few times without crashing). Good luck.

I suppose there are aspects of Harrier Strike Mission and Fokker
Triplane that make them 'flight simulators', but mostly they seem to me to
be mere war game type programs. I would like to see something for the Mac that
would allow you to fly a Cessna (for example) into a choice of real-life
airports.. alot like the Microsoft flight simulator.

I have the Fokker Triplane program, and believe me, it is NOT a war game
program! In fact, I have never used the gun (you can easily "turn it off",
an eliminate the gunsight from your screen).

I have a friend who is a pilot (flies a Cessna something-or-other) who loves
the program -- He says it's the closest thing to flying a real airplane that
he's ever seen, comparing favorably to some trainer.

He has used Microsoft's "Flight" Simulator extensively, and says there's no
comparison. (I haven't used Microsoft's at all, so I can't say from personal
experience, but he says that if you want pretty pictures, get one like
Microsoft's; if you want the feel of flying a real airplane, such as
throttle, rudder, and stick response, buy the Fokker.)

I have never flown an airplane, but I am really impressed with the Fokker.
No pretty pictures, but lots of attention to the things that count.
