[net.micro.mac] MegaMax C System Configuration

sumacc@uwmacc.UUCP (Rick Keir) (01/08/86)

Here is how I configure my MegaMax C compiler disk.

First, install these desk accessories: "Extras" (shows
free disk and memory space, deletes files and compacts
memory); "Idle" (bouncing Macintosh; prevents screen burn
in), "BaseTool" (hex/octal/binary/decimal conversions),
"DiskInfo" (lists file names, sizes, type/creator codes,
size of data and resource forks, and date modified).

You may also want these desk accessories: "Multi-
ScrapBook" (multiple scrapbooks); "MockWrite" (simple text
processor); "MockPrint" (simple file printer); and "MockTer-
minal" (simple terminal program).

Then replace your finder with "Mighty Finder"
(shareware). Do this by copying it over, then using some
utility such as MacTools (commercial: part of CopyII Mac)
to rename it. Actually, most things that let you rename
files don't complain about doin this, other than the Finder
itself. Your disk will now boot using this as the finder.
This lets you change creator/type codes,
bundle/locked/invisible bits. You can launch programs. You
can delete, copy and rename files. This covers most of what
one does in program development with the normal finder, and
adds in the functionality of the SetFile utility.

Finally, go through and use Mighty Finder or SetFile to
change the file type of each of the standard MegaMax header
files from "TEXT" to something innocuous, like "fred". Why?
Now your header files will still show up whenever the com-
piler needs them, but when you use the minifinder for the
Editor program, they are unavailable. This has 2 benefits:
you can't accidentally alter the contents of them, and you
get a much more reasonable list of possible files to open in
the editor.

Of course, if you get the Hierarchical File System
(HFS) that comes with HD20, this will quite probably not
work. However, many other things won't, either. I don't
know about MegaMax C, but I have read that Mac C 2.0 (Consu-
lair) and MDS Edit (the editor for most program development
systems) does not run under HFS. Since MegaMax C has a
second editor that is NOT MDS Edit, it may still be usable
without an update.
