[net.micro.mac] HFS/Finder 5.1 Oddities

vishniac@wanginst.UUCP (Ephraim Vishniac) (01/16/86)

Playing with Finder 5.1 and HFS on my non-Apple hard disk, I've
found several strange things not previously mentioned in this
space. I'm curious to know if other people have seen these.

Bad Things:

1. Double-clicking a MacDraw document won't launch MacDraw 1.7.
Instead, "An application can't be found to open this document."
I can open the document either by running MacDraw first or by
selection both MacDraw and the document, then choosing "Open" from
the file menu. This problem does not occur with any other application
I tried (MacWrite, MultiPlan, MacPaint, Dynamo, Font/DA Mover).

2. The ImageWriter icon turns to garbage. Looking at the desktop file
with ResEdit 1.0D5, I can't find it at all, but there is a blank icon.

Good Things:

3. Apple finally fixed the behavior of _Eject, so it won't try to eject
a non-removable disk. This is a *major* improvement in the behavior
of MultiPlan, which makes a sincere effort to eject the default disk
before it asks for the key disk. You can still _UnMountVol a non-removable
disk, however. One way to do this is by dragging the disk in the trash.

4. The finder/file manager now recognize the size of a disk as a WORD
instead of an INTEGER. To Finder 4.1, volumes over 16M (32K sectors)
appeared to have negative sizes, with bozo results. Finder 5.1 isn't
in trouble until a disk reaches 32M (64K sectors). Since larger disks
are certain to come soon, I'll be interested to see how they fix this.
