maclab@reed.UUCP (Mac DLab) (01/21/86)
Greetings -- After returning from the Expo in SF, and after catching up with the volumes of news articles in net.sources.mac, I have a few comments which may be of interest to you: Re: Reed College Maturity Discussion ------------------------------------ I don't have too much to say about this -- just a note of thanks to those who posted articles in support of the materials that have come out of this lab, and/or in support of source posting in general. Also, as someone pointed out, it is from this login (maclab) and not from hundreds of faceless Reed students, that most of the postings in question originated from. Let's not continue this trend of maligning an institution for the actions of individuals. Re: Billiard Parlour Crash on HyperDrive 20's --------------------------------------------- Again, my apologies for those of you who had Hyperdrive crashes because of Billiard Parlour (posted under the name 'Collision Dynamics Application'). I finally talked to Jay Roth from General Computer and found out what is going on. The Problem: As most of you know, the HyperDrive 20 system includes their own 32-bit custom trap manager (they had to write it in order to be able to expand the system heap, thereby allowing more drawers to be open at any one time). There is a bug in one of the calls (gettrapaddress or settrapaddress, I can't remember which): register A2 is not restored after the call, so any code which calls the bad routine may have trouble. Apparently, the Free-Form sound mode (which Billiard Parlour uses) of the standard Macintosh sound driver is affected by this bug, and hence the crash. So, not only Billiard Parlour, but also some other programs which use free-form sound, may have trouble with Hyperdrive 20's. The Solution: The next release of HypderDrive system software will fix the problem (I have verified that that is indeed the case). So, wait for a few weeks, get the software update, then run Billiard Parlour, and it will work. Re: Rascal Release ------------------ The Rascal release will be completely out of my hands as of February 3rd, which means they should be shipping from Metaresearch later that week. The February 3rd date is more than a guess -- it is a promise to Metaresearch. I will post a summary of the contents of the Rascal release to the net as soon as it starts shipping.
