[net.micro.mac] In Box ???

keith@ssc-vax.UUCP (Keith Nemitz) (01/28/86)

Now that all you lucky attendants of AppleWorld Expo have begun to
spin traveler's tails, I hope I can beg some information from you.

I heard a rumor about a Mail system for Appletalk that was implemented
as a Desk Accessory. Who is marketing it? How much does it cost?

Love all the stories about SuperMac board from Levco, but I keep
getting contradicting reports whether it includes an internal hard disk.
For the price, one might imagine them tossing one in for good measure.

Now, one aged cuban cigar for an answer to the following:
Due to the change from software to hardware to control the
variable speed disk drive, will copy protected software that relies
on bizarre speed formats boot in the Mac+???? Losing much sleep. Please help.

Thank you in retrospect from a future time coordinate.

Here's the story about the (one of the) mailers that were shown at
the Macworld/AppleWorld Expo.

The niftiest mailer I saw was from (suprise!) THINK technologies, and was
indeed implemented as a desk ornament. But there's a catch, that it is that
is a >100Kb desk ornament (custom segloader) and it needs a dedicated
macintosh to serve as a mail server. It will work with a variety of
file server and hard disk drive to store mail, and has BBOARD facilities.

All in all, it was sexy. The bad news is, it doesn't support 822 or 920
style mail, when I mentioned this to the rep from THINK he said
something on the order of "Oh, thats a good idea, we didn't think about
that...", but assured me that they would consider it seriously in light
of Apple's commitment to internetworking with DEC/IBM/et al.

Now for the really cool info: on Levco's killer Macintosh.
For around 6k (yes Virginia, $6000) you can get your Macintosh or
Macintosh Plus upgraded to have 4 Mb memory, 20Mb internal drive,
16Mhz 68020 and 16Mhz 68881. I asked them about its speed, and they
said it was around 2.5 MIPS, using Mac C from Consuliar with the
68020 option turned on in the compiler. I got to play with it for
a few mins, and its was to say the least it was FAST.

It is worth noting that companies like Apollo and Sun are coming out
with 68020/881 machines in the $6K price range. Now while I do like
the Mac, there is something to be said for real virtual memory,
multi-programming operating systems. (If only somebody would do
a MacPaint port...)
