[net.micro.mac] Info sought on 'C' compilers...

rajiv@ur-helheim.UUCP (Rajiv Arora) (01/30/86)

Hello, everyone. This article has absolutely no informational content, so if
you're reading only one article today, this isn't it!

Seriously, though, this is a request for advice from experienced Mac users.
I plan to develop some software on the Mac and am somewhat at a loss as to which
development system to buy. I would prefer to work with 'C', but I cannot decide
between the various available options. I would be very interested to hear from
people who have used these systems and have recommendations in this regard. The
ones I'm considering are Aztec, Megamax and Consulair, but there may be others
I'm not aware of.

I would appreciate replies mailed directly to me and not posted, unless you
feel this is of general interest. I'm a new user of the net and I hope this
posting doesn't break any rules of netiquette. Kindly advice would be decidedly
preferable to vitriolic sarcasm!

At the moment, I would have to recommend the Aztec C Commercial version ($500).
It produces the best code of the three major C compilers (Aztec, Consulair,
& MegaMax), they give great support, and they include utilities like make and
grep that Consulair charges extra for.

Bad side:
	doesn't work with HFS (yet)
unix style interface (some people think this is a plus)

Consulair's compiler gets my second place vote, and it scores points for using
the Mac interface, being MDS compatible, and having a nifty profiler desk
accesorry (if you buy the $100 utilities pack).

Bad side of Consulair is the rather poor code generation & the high prices they
charge for upgrades.

Both of these compilers may be obsoleted by Apple's version of Green Hills
C, which unfortunately won't be available to the general public until Sept.
or later. However, both Aztec and Consulair both claim to have compilers
which produce better code than Green Hills in the works.

Megamax? Well, lets just say that I don't like it, and leave it at that. It
does compile very quickly though.
