[net.micro.mac] Mac Plus Peripheral Adaptor

steves@kepler.UUCP (Steve Schlich) (02/01/86)

[Eat me, smoke me, drink me]

Mild Flame: I took delivery of a Mac Plus last weekend...truly a good
upgrade of a good machine. Problem is, I have peripherals (specifically
MIDI hardware) that wants to use the old D9 modem port. The Macintosh
peripheral adaptor (service part #MO 185) did *not* come with the Mac Plus
and will not be available from Apple until mid-February.

Am I being punished for buying a Mac Plus so soon after the announcement?
(A valid question, since the price when I can get the part will be $30).
Does anyone have a quicker/cheaper solution? MIDI-wise and modem-wise, I
am dead in the water until then.

Thanks in advance for any help.

If I'm not mistaken, the cable that goes from the 512K mac to the imagrwiter II
can be used in the opposite direction (I've yet to meet a directional wire).
I (of course) have forgotten the part number (Larry, could you help me out
here?), but it's a 9-pin din to db9 cable. Any Apple dealer that sells
Imagwriter II's ought to have this cable.

I think that a great many of us are being RIPPED OFF by unscrupulous dealers.
My advice is that whenever you get ANYTHING from a dealer, be it MAC+,
Hyperdrive, ANYTHING that you call the manufacturer first and ask what you
should get from the dealer. Then make VERY sure that the dealer provides it.
I have had many problems in this regard. Not providing manuals, stickers, spare
parts, etc. It would not suprise me at all if the dealer kept your adapter (or
would have if it was available) and then would be more than happy to sell you
one for the $30. Another example of this is the dealer not testing a Hyper
after installation. This saves him lots of time and lets him install more
in the same time period thus making more money. Screw the user seems to be
motto here.

CAVEAT EMPTOR baby!!
