[net.micro.mac] Apple Certified Developers and the Mac+ Upgrade

(Flame ON!, to Certified Developers)

Historically, when Apple released new hardware or software, it
was made available, in-advance and at discounted prices, to the
Apple Certified Developers.

This was done to foster advanced software development (and it's
rather clear that it IS the software that sells the hardware!),
and to reduce the economic burden on the software developers who
MUST have the most current hardware available ASAP to develop and
test their products.

With the announcement of the Mac+ and its upgrade kits, there is
*NO* policy to allow Certified Developers to get their upgrades
other than via the local dealer queue (currently more than 100 on
one waiting list!) and even then only BEGINNING to be available
in April. YET, the Mac+ is shipping NOW, and software must be
tested/modified to run on it! This will surely delay Mac+
compatible software!

Furthermore, with no traditional discount to the Certified
Developers, the economic burden of the upgrade (> $1100) is
significant for the small shops.

Since this is such a radical departure from Apple's previous
support of their Certified Developers, I contacted Sherry
Morningstar, Apple's Developer Relations Manager and discussed
the issue with her.

She indicated that, as in any organization, the result of
isolated policy decisions are not always understood when these
policies are implemented, and that there MIGHT be a chance for
reconsideration. HOWEVER, she needs WRITTEN backup from as many
people as possible to support a bid for such a potential policy
change.

Hence, I would strongly recommend that all of you Certified
Developers put your thoughts ON PAPER and send them, ASAP, to
