[net.micro.mac] Switcher 4.6:tip and question

borton@sdcc3.UUCP (Chris Borton) (02/10/86)

Andy Hertzfield made a presentation at the San Diego Mac User Group last
Wednesday that was impressive. He demonstrated Servant, which blew me
completely away. I'll try to summarize that soon. One of the programs I was
anxious to get from him and did was Switcher 4.6, which handles HFS properly.

Can I post this to net.sources.mac? Andy posted it to CompuServe, and said
he wished he hadn't because there aren't many people out there that need it.
The few that do (like me and my HD20) are desperate for it.

For those unfamiliar with this, Switcher 4.4 worked fine with HFS but if
applications from different folders (directories) were stored in a document
file it wouldn't find them upon double-clicking the doc. 4.6 fixes this by
making an exhaustive search of the entire disk for the application in
question. This can lead to some real thrashing!

A hint for those who have 4.6: keep your most-used applications (uw and
MacWrite 4.5 for me) in one folder, preferably with Switcher in it. Doing
this reduced my load time by about 20-30 seconds!

Happy Maccing!
