[net.micro.mac] Mac-modem pin configuration.

tjm@aaec.OZ (Tom Moss) (02/10/86)

We are useing a non-Apple modem to connect our Mac to the
outside world. Does anyone know the D9 pin assignments nesescary to make up a D9to D25 cable.

Here is one configuration that seems to work (at least for Red Ryder).

	Mac	Modem
	1	1	Frame Ground
	2 No connection
	3	7	Signal Ground
	4 No Connection
	5	2	Data
	7	5	CTS
	8	7	(not needed)
	9	3	Data

I just made a cable for a USRobotics 2400; info comes from their tech
support people.

	Mac(DB9)	Modem(DB25)
	3 7	Signal Ground
	5 2	TxD+
	6 20	DTR
	7 8	CD
	9 3	RxD-
		others - NOT CONNECTED

According to Macintosh Tech Note 10 (Pinouts), pin 8 on the mac end should be
grounded to emulate RS232C; I did it, but I note that Halff@utah-cs says
it isn't necessary.

You should be able to set DIP switches on your modem to make either of these
work.

The following connections have worked for a Mac to Racal-Vadic modem
link:

DB-25 DB-9
----- -----
  6 2
  7 3
  2 5
  20 6
  5 7
  8 (jumpered to 5) 7
  1 8
  3 9

The remaining DB-25 pins should be unconnected. If this doesn't work
you can always try plugging in your Applewriter cable.
I had to make a cable by hand for a Mac w/ MacTerminal to VAX connection
a while back.

Hope it helps.

The Applewirter cable is wired as a null modem. That is, pins 2 and 3 are
reversed. It's perfect for sending data to another computer's RS-232
interface, but it won't work with a modem.
