Ya know, I was thinking... I can't think of a better use for a tax dollar than to give it to some institution to write software which will end up in the public domain. Everybody gives a few pennies to the government, they give a few bucks to some hackers at a school, and PRESTO! Wonderful cheap software for everybody. Software that everyone can run, compatibility no object. You give pennies to the government and usually they build things that get potholes or spew smoke or cost more money.
