We have several MacXLs and Macs connected in a net running XL/Serve. One of the MacXLs works as a central hard disk. By the way, the problems reported in the previous message are independent of XL/Serve. E g we have MacPascal on the central disk. During the last 6 months we have run programming courses for about 500 students taking Pascal on this configuration. We are quite satisfied with the system although there are some problems with XL/Serve and several serious bugs in MacPascal. Here I would like to pose some questions concerning XL/Serve. Our version is from August 1985. 1. Printing of MacPascaldocuments There is a printer server facility in XL/Serve. However we haven't been able to use it to print documents correctly on a connected ImageWriter, since the text gets corrupted (this applies if even you have XON/XOFF!). This happens to MacPascal as well as MacWrite and MacPaint documents. Still worse, the presence of the XL/Serve desk accessory, which you need to work with the central disk, makes it impossible to print MacPascal documents correctly on a locally connected ImageWriter! You get a lot of extra tabs or spaces. The only possible way has been to print the documents from the Finder (which in the process opens MacPascal) on a locally connected printer! This is,to say the least, somewhat annoying. The only only good consequence of that is that our paper consumption becomes low. Any similar experiences or explanations or best of all solutions? 2. XL/Serve and HFS Is it possible to use XL/Serve together with the new HFS-system on the local Macs? The reason I ask is that we haven't been able to get hold of a MacPlus yet to test it ourselves.
