[net.micro.mac] Is Switcher 4.6 PD

gjb@unirot.UUCP (Greg Brail) (02/27/86)

The new moderator of Info-mac/mod.computers.macintosh recently put
Switcher 4.6 on line at sumex-aim for FTP by ARPAnet users. I asked
if he could mail me the program so I could post it to net.sources.mac
for we Usenetters. However, I'm not sure how legal that is. Wasn't
Switcher just taken out of the public domain? If so, won't I get into
some legal trouble (and serious flamage) if I post it? Does anyone
(like Larry Rosenstein) know what the deal is? Thanks.

Switcher 4.6 was given to Delphi directly by Andy Hertzfeld. HOWEVER, we were
asked by Apple *not* to post it since Apple wants some better control over
beta testing (or something like that.) So, I'm not even sure it should be
on INFO-MAC.

You can be sure that I will post any official Apple software that has been
made available to Delphi ASAP.

For the record, Switcher 4.6 was recently removed from the
info-mac archives by the moderator.

The following is from INFO-MAC Digest V4 #22. I am reposting it here to
clear up the confusion.

The Official Word on Swithcer 4.6

Chris Espinosa, Product Manager of System Software at Apple told me
yesterday that Apple has not released Switcher 4.6 for distribution as
public domain software. Apple's legal department is currently
completing the paperwork necessary to release Switcher for testing.
Until that time, Switcher should NOT be distributed freely.
