#N:uiucdcs:10600025:000:919 uiucdcs!kos Nov 18 14:57:00 1982 I would like to take this opportunity to explain a mistake that has apparently been made in the posting of news articles. We have a quite different news setup here at the University of Illnois. We still have standard bsd news, but the majority of users on our system do not use the news program, but rather the notes system which was developed and programmed here by Ray Essick. As such, when we post articles, we are actually writing them to local files which are logically connected to the network newsgroups. When the computer dials out to Purdue (or wherever), it includes any notesfile traffic since the past link as news items. It seems that when we write notes in our "net.jokes" notesfile, they are posted to the net on the "net.joke" newsgroup (no "s"). This is not the fault of the users who wrote the notes, so please don't send them any nasty mail about it. I will try to have the problem fixed ASAP.
