MAC ZAP Version 4.1 MacZAP Version 4.1 has been released by MicroAnalyst in Austin, (512)926-4527, and I obtained permission from Les Herbst to post the complete current set of Patch-files to the net. These patches are used with one of the programs on the MacZap product disk (Mac Zap Patcher) to install many popular programs on your hard disk. There are currently 103 such patch-files, each in a seperate file and I'll post a catalog of their names later. 103 PATCH-FILES spells HEAD-ACHES Having this many files on the Desktop causes all kind of problems (with Finder-4.1, anyway). For example, selecting about 25 of them at the same time and trying to move them to another folder for processing with Packit-II caused the system to crash. And unpacking a Packit-file into which I had packed all 103 of them, failed miserably, apparently because without special preparations of the (otherwise) blank disk, more than 95 would not fit into the Desktop. Sooooo, please, remember this warning when you unpack the files with PACKIT-II. PATCHER DOCUMENTATION I've also uploaded a documentation file on patches, from the MAC ZAP disk. MAC ZAP RECOVER Les also wrote a new program, which allows recovery of hard-disks, the only one on the market (according to him). works with HyperDrive-20, I am told, and many others (but I had no opportunity, time, or reason to test this out yet) OTHER PROGRAMS IMPROVED All other programs have a recent creation date, but I am not in a position to describe changes in MAC ZAP TOOLS, COPY, and PATCHER in any detail. MANUAL IMPROVED There are additions and improvements to the manual. BOOK REWRITTEN Oldtimers in this group will remember that there was some criticism about the value of a book Les had written on SOFTWARE PROTECTION and that I defended it last year and announced that Les was rewriting it and adding a new chapter of 30 to 40 pages on the Macintosh in particular. I haven't read the new edition yet, but hope to do so during the next few days (and post a review later). Les indicated to me last year that those of you who bought the First Edition would get a break on getting the updated version (I forgot to ask details tonight - I'll try to remember to ask - seems as if he said "updates at cost", which I'd interpret as $15 more or less -) Disclaimers: ANY and ALL apply. noone here is responsible; I hope you benefit. (Is there really a reason for this?) Serious Disclaimer (just in case): this posting is *MY* responsibility *EXCLUSIVELY*. I do *NOT* benefit in any way that I know of. PS: look for three 'packed' and 'hexed' postings in net.sources.mac.
