When my furnace died earlier this month and my plumber gave me a $2000 estimate for a new one, I nearly died until he told me to file a claim against my homeowner's insurance. Sure enough, I was covered because the furnace died due to a failure of "safety equipment". "Safety equipment" is defined as that stuff that is supposed to shut off the furnace if something isn't right (low water cutoff, for example). One word of caution, my insurance company (and others also, probably) base the amount of coverage on whether you are insured for the "replacement" value on your house. Being insured for "replacement" value for me meant the insurance company bought me a new furnace. File this info away. It sure came as a VERY pleasant suprise to me (and my wallet).
