[net.micro.mac] Slow Macget Transfers

hamachi@KIM.BERKELEY.EDU (Gordon Hamachi) (04/17/86)

Has anyone noticed that the current version of macget is amazingly slow?
It can take (literally) hours to upload files of about 100 K, even at
2400 baud. It appears that some handshaking signal gets lost. After a
few block transfers, the Tx and Rx LEDs on my modem go dark for periods of
10s of seconds, until (I assume) a timeout occurs and the block gets resent.

Strangely, I have a binary from an old version of macget that works much
faster. The Tx and Rx LEDs blink almost constantly, reassuring me that
data is transferring at a high rate.

This good version is dated 12/31/84, and "sum macget" yields the checksum 50451.
There were several mods to macget after that date, to do things like make
it work when rlogged-in. One of these mods must have broken something.

If you have noticed that uploads are excruciatingly slow, try using this
older verion of macget.

If you have a later version of macget that works fine, please notify me.
If you have those older sources, hang onto them!

If you hacked on macget and distributed the results, perhaps you should
take a look at what you did, to verify that you're not the guilty culprit
who broke the program.
