[net.micro.mac] caching and the cache bit: reminder

borton@sdcc3.UUCP (Chris Borton) (04/20/86)

This is just a reminder to people with the new ROMs who have some amount of
RAM allotted for caching: applications will *NOT* use the cache unless the
'cache bit' for that application is set. This is easily done with ResEdit's
Get Info on a file.

I assume Apple did this for compatibility reasons, but it will be quite a
while before applications will come out with this bit already on. I
personally was amazed at what a difference it made after I 'went around' and
turned on all the bits of my favorite applications. Disk-intensive programs
like Excel and Factfinder benefit especially.

Has anyone found any incompatibilities? [Does some kind soul wish to write a
quick 'installer' that turns on the cache bit of each file selected?
T'would be nice for people that don't enjoy working with the megolith ResEdit
like I do]
