The ROM question aside, it shouldn't be too difficult to upgrade your own Mac to an internal 800K drive. Is it more difficult than pulling out the old drive and putting the new one in place? Is there something different about the drives that Apple uses? I have heard the myth that Mac drives write on the opposite side of the disk than standard 3-1/2 drives. Subsequent discussions on the net have quashed that one. How about the speed control? The 400K drives used external speed control and the 800K ones have speed control on the drive. Is this a special Apple mod? Has anybody opened up their Mac+ or Apple-upgraded Mac and taken a good look at the drive? Labels, part numbers, etc? This kind of thing seems like an item of general interest. I have seen bare Sony drives on the market for well under the price of an Apple upgrade...
