[net.micro.mac] Ticking Disk Drive?

hamachi@KIM.BERKELEY.EDU (Gordon Hamachi) (04/04/86)

My Mac+ makes a quiet ticking sound about once every half second, unless
a disk is inserted. Is this normal?

My Mac+ makes a ticking sound too, but only once in a while (usually
it's there when I turn on the machine, I think). In addition,
it sometimes makes a high pitched squeal which usually lasts for
about 1-3 minutes before fading away. The squeal sounds like the
kind of problem that has been discussed here before, unlike the
ticking.

I have noticed the ticking sound coming from the 800K drives when
a disk hasn't been inserted in them. I especially noticed it in the
external drives.
Also, a friend with an Amiga has the same problem with his 880K
external drive. The sound goes away when a disk is inserted.

I've got both the ticking and the squealing. The squealing only happens
with SS disks, and apparently Apple knows about it. I'd like to know
why it happens.

I have noticed it from both the INTERNAL and EXTERNAL drives of my Amiga.
I presume the OS just wants to know what it's got available (mounted).
