[net.misc] FLASH: "Andy Tannenbaum" project ported from an 11/23 to an 11/780

randals (11/10/82)

As most of you may already be aware of, Andy Tannenbaum is not
really someone we humans can call "like kind". As someone before
has stated, "Andy" is really an AI (Artifical Ignorance) project,
designed to submit random notes to the net in an attempt to pass
the Turing test.

Well, with great difficulty, I managed to procure a copy of the source
for the "Andy" program from "floyd!" with my magic UUCP bug, and have
succeeded (with much effort) to bring "him" up on our VAX.

I want to suggest in the future that programs written on small machines
(such as the one that "Andy" was written on) PLEASE NOT assume that
an "int" is the same size as a "short". It makes stealing software
a whole lot harder.

Here's one of the messages that "Andy" said when I first brought him
up....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
	There's a lot of flakey things going on with this net lately.
	I'm personally a little apalled at the types of activities
	that people are suggesting I should be at, and then NOT
	inviting me to them.
	I don't even think I'd WANT to come to any party that I was
	invited to.
	Please mail your replies to /dev/null.... I don't have time
	to read them.
		Andy Tannenbaum   Bell Labs  Whippany, NJ   (201) 386-6491
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Note that because of the larger word size of the VAX as compared
to the 11/23 that the messages are not really as good. The original
program running on "floyd" is still the best. Keep it up, "Andy"!

If anyone wants the source to "Andy", please let me know.
I will digestify the results.

(Maybe I shouldn't sign my name...)

For philosophy majors only:
How do you *ever* know that the rest of the people on the net are not
all the result of a large BTL AI project. For that matter, how do you
know that the rest of the people that work/play *at your site* are
not sophisticated androids?!?! (Notice... android <==> "Andy")

[My sincerest apoligies to you if you've seen this before, but I believe]
[it was submitted the first time during a down on "teklabs" -- rls]
