[net.micro.mac] Help in planning computer fair

ncahec@ecsvax.UUCP (Jim Gogan) (05/05/86)

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is in the early
stages of planning a "computer fair" for the fall of 1986
          (COMPUFEST '86 - makes for spiffy t-shirt slogan). Semi-tentative
          dates are from October 2-4.

Rather than a broad hodgepodge of vendors representing every type
of product imaginable, we felt that it would be better to solicit
speakers and vendor participation based on specific topic areas
that represented the needs and interests of students, faculty and
staff on our campus. These topic areas are:

               - Computer-based training (CBT)/CAI/Instructional development
               - Text analysis/text databases/"research in humanities"
               - Desktop publishing
               - Statistics/data analysis
               - Graphics
               - Data entry
               - Micro/mainframe communications
               - Networking
               - Music applications

Based on these topics, we are asking for help in putting together
a list of vendors and possible speakers to contact. If anyone
knows of a particularly interesting product or a speaker that
falls into one of the above areas, please let me know. We would
especially appreciate comments and past experiences from other
universities that have had recent computer fairs.

In terms of speakers, we would like to get some people who are
not "overly technical"; in other words, can speak to interests of
non-computer professionals who are using computers as tools. We
are emphasizing micros, because that's where we think the most
interest is. However, at this stage we are not really excluding
anything from consideration. Any help or pointers that anyone
can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Please contact me via "e-mail"; either USENET (ncahec@ecsvax) or
BITNET (ncahec@ecsvax -or- unahec@tucc). I'd rather keep track
of comments that way than via phone. Thanks!
