I am trying to install system 3.1.1 using the installer that came on the System Installation disk from the "December 85" supplement. When I start the installer I get the option of installing "Macintosh Plus (v 1.1b1)". When I click this and try to install it on a disk, I get the message File "System" on System Installation is not the right date for "Macintosh Plus (v 1.1b1) This is version 2.1 of the installer. If I try using version 2.0 to install system 3.1.1, I get the same error message. Yet I have used version 2.0 of the installer to install system 3.0. What's going on? Which is the "bad" system, version 3.0 or 3.1, that the warnings have been posted about? Has anyone else had trouble using the installer from the December 85 supplement? Any help would be appreciated. -- Larry Riddle Emory University Dept of Math and CS Atlanta, Ga 30322 {akgua,sb1,gatech,decvax}!emory!riddle USENET riddle@emory CSNET riddle.emory@csnet-relay ARPANET

Has anyone else had trouble using > the installer from the December 85 supplement? > As most of you are probably (now) aware, the Installer (well, at least any version that I've seen--I haven't tried the new one I got with 5.3/3.2) is incompatible with System file 3.1.1. Rumor has it that this is the reason why Apple is insisting that Finder 5.1/System 3.0 are the 'currently supported' versions. System file 3.0 was supposed to have problems trashing itself, and System 3.1 didn't really work at all. I feel safer using Apple's 'unsupported' system than using the other two that have known bugs (of course, 3.1.1 could have some problems that they're not telling us, but I haven't seen any in the 6 weeks or so I've been using it). And, never bother with the installer, just remove the fonts/da's in your current system that you want, and then replace the Finder/System on your disk--I've heard of MANY bad stories about the Installer.
