I recently upgraded my Mac with the 128K ROMs, DS internal floppy, Levco's
SCSI interface card, and a SuperMac DataFrame 20. I have used a Levco
"Monster Mac" since the begining of August 1985. Running with a 1.2 Meg
Ramdisk was quite acceptable, but I got fed up with not having all my
applications and data online.
Last week I had the Mac upgraded as described above. The Apple ROMs and
floppy were installed by a local ComputerLand, the new Levco ROMs and SCSI
interface, by CJS in Berkeley. I bought the hard disk from Computer Attic in
Palo Alto. Prices - Apple stuff $290, Levco stuff $205, DataFrame 20 $936.
Since then it has worked just fine. My applications run, performance is good.
I installed System 3.1.1 and Finder 5.2 to replace the System 3.0/Finder 5.1
shipped by SuperMac. The only stuff they add is a file "SCSI items" which
contains an INIT that improves performance. The system will work (slower)
without this file. I called SuperMac for some details not covered by their
skimpy documentation. The technical support person I talked to was *very*
knowledgable and helpful.
Overall I could not have asked for a smoother upgrade. I thought others
might like to know.
