Does anyone know how to use the Mac+ and an external 800 K drive to copy copy protected 400K disks or files to 800K disks. I have tried Copy Mac II ver. 5.1. If I put in an already formatted blank 800K disk in it is still converted back to a 400K disk even if I tell Copy MacII to make an 800K copy. If I just try separately copying the files when they are protected, I get a system error ID 10!! I even can't unprotect the files with Cp Mac II. If I try I still get system error ID 10!! In short, does anyone know how to make backup copies of protected files from 400K disks to 800K disks using the Mac+ and Copy Mac II Ver 5.1 or other!! If you can, do you know how to put more than one copy protected file on one disk.

This problem, in one form, was the subject in Ken Peterson's column in the Portland MUG (PMUG) newsletter: Mouse Tracks. Ken had prepared 25 work discs for PMUG's popular MacCamp, only to find none of them worked on anyone's 512 Mac, even though he had checked them out at home. Subsequent experimenting and consultation with some programmer friends produced some interesting observations. He found that by using any of three copy programs on his 2MB Mac with the new ROMs (I think he has a Levco MonsterMac as opposed to the Mac+), if allowed to initialize the disks, produced copies unreadable on 512K Macs. He and friends presume that the problem probably comes from the difference between how the old and new ROM sets call for initialization: the copy programs call for nonspecific "Initialization" when you select that option, whereas the new ROMs have two kinds, one-sided MFS and two-sided HFS. The default in the upgrade is 2-sided. To quote Ken: "So it appears the programs produced copies initialized at two-sided but copied as one-sided and with a directory or volume allocation structure the 512K Macs couldn't recognize." His solution: "Just use the Finder to initialize the disks as single-sided and then use the programs without further initialization to make the copies." The copy programs he used were: MacClone 2.0, 512K Disc Copy (PD), and Disk Copy (from DOP Q&DU, vol.2).

At an user group meeting last evening in which a representative from Apple spoke the Apple rep stated that one of the many bugs that system version 3.1 had was that a 400K MFS disk created on a 128K rom machine can not be read on a 64K rom machine. This may explain the problem the Oregon user group had in duplicating disks on the MacPlus. -- ---- David Whiteman, University of California, San Diego

My recommendation is to purchase a HD Patcher and patch your protected programs so that you can get them over to 800K. /* Jason Haines STD: (02) 73-4444 * ElecEng Undergraduate ISD: +61 2 73-4444 * 73 Davidson Avenue ACSnet: baron@runx * Concord NSW 2137 CSNET: baron@runx.oz * AUSTRALIA ARPA: baron%runx.oz@seismo.css.gov * * UUCP: * {enea,hplabs,mcvax,prlb2,seismo,ubc-vision,ukc}!munnari!runx.oz!baron */
