I recently tried to unpack the Capt'n Magneto application using Packit II. that the data fork of the programme was bad and that I shouldn't use it. Unfortunately, it also seems to have trashed the disk, as the finder (version 4.0) now crashes whenever I insert the disk. I believe that the problem is related to the unpacking because I foolishly did it twice (after using FEDIT to copy the files off the first trashed disk) and have two trashed disks for my troubles. 1) Re: PackitII Why does anyone use this, given that: 1) it's not PD. 2) It doesn't seem to work reliably. 3) It occasionally does unsocial things. There must be some great advantages that I'm unaware of to make up for these disadvantages. I'm also somewhat puzzled about the source of the error. I don't believe that there was a transmission error, since the file was unbinhexed without an error. Any hypotheses? 2) Re: my disk How can I fix the trashed disks? The symptom is that inserting the disk gets a window saying that the disk needs slight repairs; click yes for the repairs causes the finder to crash, ID=02. Holding down option-command while inserting gets the same result. On the other hand, FEDIT and other programmes have no problems reading the files, and stuff I've copied off the disk with FEDIT works fine. I've even tried deleting the desktop file, to no avail. 3) Re: Capt'n Magneto Has anyone unpacked is sucessfully? Is there some trick? Where can I get a better copy so I can try again (perhaps one just binhexed or packed with PackitI)? Apropos, is anyone keeping the cumulative output from the net? I looked on SUMEX-AIM, but didn't see anything like *MAGNETO*. Any help anyone can offer me with these problems would be greatly appreciated. If these problems have been posted before, I apologize for the repetition, but a search of the news we still have on line turned up nothing. -- Kevin Crowston UUCP: {seismo,ut-sally}!harvard!kevin MIT Sloan School of Management ARPA: kevin@xv.mit.edu or kevin@harvard.arpa

The problem with Cap'n Magneto is that it isn't converted properly by the unix 'xbin' program (I bet you got a checksum message you ignored). If you download it to the Mac and use binhqx on it, it should be ok. You can recover your disk by going into Fedit, THEN inserting the disk, and clearing the BUNDLE bit on the Cap'n Magneto file. The resource map is trashed and the Finder is going nuts trying to look for the BNDL, ICN# and other resources. You may have to reconstruct the desktop on that disk, too. -- =Spencer ({ihnp4,decvax}!utah-cs!thomas, thomas@utah-cs.ARPA)
