[net.micro.mac] Modula-2 and HyperDrive 20 on Mac+ ***WARNING***

hobbit@ecsvax.UUCP (Derrell Piper) (05/24/86)

  Warning:

After downloading the 13 part Modula-2 compiler from MACSERVE@BITNIC,
I ran into the following problem. After running the compiler and loader
a while, I went into the HyperDrive Manager and tried to Create a drawer.
BOMB, ID = 3. Oops, I thought. Humm, I'll just delete the Modula-2 drawer.
Nope, when I went to delete the drawer I had n folders named MODLIB where
n was approximately equal to the number of times I ran the EXEC 512 image.
None of these drawers were deletable, although some contained over 4 million
files :-). Some even were protected by passwords. I tried running the disk
test utility, but that uncovered nothing. The only solution was to re-format
the HyperDrive.

So, I would be wary with the ETH compiler with my configuration.

Does anyone have the newer ETHZ comercial product and use it on a Mac+
with an HFS drive? If so, I would appreciate hearing from you.

  Cheers.

I have just received MacMETH. This is the new 1-pass compiler from
ETH. It is many, many, many times faster than the older 4-pass
compiler. It compiles down to native code. It is $99 from ETH (you
can get it from Modula Corp. in Utah).

I have not used to too much yet, and I will be posting a more detailed
review soon. But, I have used it on a machine with a HyperDrive - I
normally use it on a Mac+ with a Dataframe 20. One warning - MacMETH
will allow you to call ToolBox and OS calls, but they do not supply
the modules. They are trivial, but tedious to write. I might end up
doing this myself. The library modules that they do give you make the
Mac look like a Lillith. If you don't know what a Lillith looks like,
then you will be nicely surprised by their editor. The environment
that they supply does not follow the Mac guidelines at all. But, it
is still very useable and you can still write Mac applications.

I hope to post a full review soon. I still think it beats MacModula
by a long shot.
